Amboseli is elephant country: large, relaxed family herds cross the open pans in full view, framed by Kilimanjaro rising across the border in Tanzania. The flat, open landscape means children actually see the animals rather than hunting for them in bush, and Observation Hill gives a proper look over the swamps where elephants, hippos and buffalo gather. It's about a four to five hour drive from Nairobi.
Good to know: Kilimanjaro usually clears at dawn and again in the late afternoon — plan drives around those windows.
