Bomas of Kenya

Bomas of Kenya recreates traditional homesteads (bomas) from communities across the country, so families can walk through and see how different Kenyan peoples lived. The highlight is the daily performance of traditional music, dance and acrobatics in the large auditorium — colourful, energetic and a real cultural education for kids. It's one of the best places to introduce children to Kenya's diversity in an afternoon.

How a family visit works

1. 1Check that day's cultural-show start time before you drive to Langata, and aim to be in the auditorium thirty minutes early. The performance is the outing; missing it leaves you with empty homesteads.
2. 2Walk the reconstructed villages first so the kids can go inside the bomas and compare how different Kenyan communities laid out a home.
3. 3Sit for the music, dance and acrobatics in the round auditorium. Put phones away for one song — the drumming is the bit they talk about later.
4. 4Eat after the show, not during. The café can wait; the dancers will not.
