Hell's Gate National Park
Hell's Gate is one of the few Kenyan parks where you can safely cycle and walk among wildlife, since there are no large predators. Families pedal past zebras, giraffes and gazelles toward towering cliffs, then hike down into the dramatic gorge with its rock formations. The landscape famously helped inspire scenery in The Lion King.
Good to know: Hire bikes at the gate; carry water and good shoes for the gorge walk.
How a family visit works
- 1Enter through a KWS gate (Elsa Gate is the usual start for the cycle) and confirm today's fees, bike-hire options, and gorge conditions. Hell's Gate is the park where you walk or pedal among zebra and giraffe because there are no large predators. It is not a crater climb.
- 2Hire bikes at the gate if you want them, or drive to a drop-off and walk. The main valley floor toward the cliffs is the family route. Carry water on the bike; there is little shade.
- 3The gorge hike is a separate decision. It is a scramble in a slot canyon, often muddy, and younger or tired children should skip it. Ask at the gate whether the lower gorge is open and whether a guide is required that day.
- 4Plan on several hours if you cycle and add the gorge. A valley-floor ride among game, then back, is enough for children under about eight.
- 5Olkaria Geothermal Spa sits inside the same park. You can add a swim if legs are finished, but that is a second ticketed stop through the park, not a free extra at the gorge.

Parent questions
- Is this the same as climbing Longonot?
- No. Hell's Gate is walking and cycling among plains game, with an optional gorge. Longonot is a steep hike up a volcano to look into a forested crater. Different parks, different legs.
- Can a seven-year-old do the gorge?
- Some can, if they like scrambling and the gorge is open. Many families bike the valley and skip the gorge without missing the point of the park. Check conditions at the gate.
