Kakamega Forest

Kakamega Open daily

Kakamega Forest is the only tropical rainforest left in Kenya, a surviving fragment of the great Guineo-Congolian belt that once crossed the continent. Guided walks lead families along shaded trails beneath a closed canopy loud with birds, past black-and-white colobus, red-tailed and de Brazza's monkeys, giant butterflies and trees the guides use as a walking pharmacy. There are no big predators, so walking is safe and calm.

Good to know: Early morning walks are best for monkeys and birds; a sunrise trip up Lirhanda Hill is worth the alarm clock.
