Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Laikipia, near Nanyuki Open daily

Ol Pejeta is a 360 square kilometre conservancy between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, home to the Big Five and to more black rhino than anywhere else in East Africa — including the world's last two northern white rhinos. Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, run with the Jane Goodall Institute, cares for more than forty rescued chimps in big riverside enclosures and is the part children talk about afterwards. Game drives, guided walks and an education centre make it an unusually hands-on safari for families.

Good to know: The chimp sanctuary keeps its own hours inside the conservancy — check them when you plan the day.
