Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta is a 360 square kilometre conservancy between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, home to the Big Five and to more black rhino than anywhere else in East Africa — including the world's last two northern white rhinos. Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, run with the Jane Goodall Institute, cares for more than forty rescued chimps in big riverside enclosures and is the part children talk about afterwards. Game drives, guided walks and an education centre make it an unusually hands-on safari for families.

How a family visit works

1. 1Decide Nairobi timing first. Ol Pejeta sits near Nanyuki, a long half-day on the road each way. An overnight (or a Nanyuki stay) lets you do a game drive and the chimpanzee sanctuary without driving in the dark with tired children. A single long day is possible if you leave very early and pick one focus; it is a grind.
2. 2Enter the conservancy at the gate and confirm fees and driving rules. This is a 360 km² Big Five landscape. You stay in the vehicle except at staffed sites.
3. 3Put Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary on the clock. It keeps its own visiting hours inside the conservancy, separate from general game-drive time. Check those hours when you plan; it is the stop children talk about after.
4. 4Use a game drive for black rhino (this is East Africa's largest sanctuary for them) and the rest of the plains game. The last two northern white rhinos are a specific, staffed viewing, not a random roadside sighting; follow whatever access the conservancy is offering that day.
5. 5Skip a second long drive if kids have melted. The education centre and chimps already make the visit different from a standard park loop.

Parent questions

Should we overnight or day-trip from Nairobi?

Overnight is the kinder family plan. A dawn-to-night day trip can work for older kids if you accept a lot of tarmac and one main activity. Do not stack chimps, a full game drive, and a late Nairobi return unless the children already know that kind of day.

Can we walk among the animals?

Game is from the vehicle. Guided walks exist as booked extras with their own age rules. The chimpanzee sanctuary is a staffed, fenced visit, not a forest stroll.
