Watamu Marine National Park
Watamu's marine park protects a stretch of coral reef, seagrass and mangrove creek that is among the best snorkelling on the Kenyan coast, with more than 600 species of fish. Glass-bottom boats run out to the coral gardens for families who would rather stay dry, and the sheltered lagoon means even beginners can snorkel comfortably at low tide. Green turtles are common, and the local turtle watch programme is worth asking about.
Good to know: Go at low tide with a licensed boat, and use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest — the coral is protected.
