Fort Jesus
Old Town, Mombasa
Open daily
Built by the Portuguese in the 1590s, Fort Jesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site guarding the entrance to Mombasa's Old Town. Families can walk its ramparts and chambers, see the on-site museum, and take in the views over the harbour while guides bring the centuries of Swahili, Portuguese and Omani history to life. Pair it with a wander through the narrow streets of Old Town.
Good to know: Hire a guide at the gate — the stories make the old walls far more interesting for kids.
