Menengai Crater
Menengai is one of the world's largest volcanic calderas, rising just above Nakuru town. A short drive reaches viewpoints on the rim where families can take in the vast crater floor and, on clear days, the Rift Valley beyond. Easy walks and the sheer scale make it a memorable, low-cost stop.
Good to know: Mornings usually have the clearest views before clouds build over the crater.
How a family visit works
- 1Drive up from Nakuru town to the crater rim. This is a viewpoint outing. You do not hike into the caldera floor with a family in tow unless you have a local arrangement and much older kids.
- 2Park at the rim stops and walk the short paths along the edge. Keep children back from drop-offs; there is not always a solid railing where people take photos.
- 3On a clear morning you see the crater floor and, farther out, Rift country. Cloud often builds later, which is why families come earlier rather than after a long town lunch.
- 4Treat it as one to two hours. Younger children can do the viewpoint and get back in the car; there is no second 'attraction' they will miss.
- 5Confirm any community or council charges at the stalls on the way up. This is not a KWS game park, so do not expect a Nakuru-style gate briefing.

- Is this the same kind of outing as Mount Longonot?
- No. Menengai is a drive-to-the-rim look. Longonot is a steep hike up an extinct volcano to a forested crater. Do not pack Menengai as if the children will be climbing for hours.
- Can we go down into the crater?
- Family visits stay on the rim. The floor is a serious extra, not the default with mixed ages.
