Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park

Ol Donyo Sabuk — Kilimambogo, the mountain of the buffalo — is a small, densely forested park rising to 2,145m about an hour and a half from Nairobi. A track climbs to the summit past the grave of Sir William Northrup McMillan, with buffalo, baboons and bushbuck along the way and views to Mount Kenya on a clear morning. Families can drive most of the way up and walk the last stretch.

How a family visit works

1. 1Enter Ol Donyo Sabuk (Kilimambogo) at the KWS gate and pay. Buffalo live in this forested mountain park, so walkers take a KWS ranger from the gate. Do not start up on your own.
2. 2Drive the track as far as you are allowed. Families can cover most of the climb in the vehicle and walk the last stretch toward the summit and Sir William Northrup McMillan's grave.
3. 3The summit is 2,145 m. On a clear morning you can see Mount Kenya. If the group is tired, the ranger walk through forest with baboons and bushbuck is enough; the last rocky bit is skippable.
4. 4Four hours is a realistic park visit. Pair with Fourteen Falls only if you started early. This is not a stroller outing.
5. 5Confirm ranger availability when you arrive. If none can accompany you, stay with whatever vehicle-accessible stretch the gate permits that day.

Why do we need a ranger?

Buffalo. KWS requires an escort for walkers. Arrange it at the gate and stay with the ranger.

Can younger children do the summit?

They can do a shorter ranger walk after the drive. The summit finish is for kids who still like climbing after a forest track. Turning around is a valid day.
