Tsavo East National Park

Taita-Taveta County Open daily

Tsavo East is vast, flat and open, a landscape of red earth and scattered baobabs where big elephant herds show up coated in the dust they have been bathing in. The Galana River draws crocodiles, hippos and game to its banks, Lugard Falls is a good picnic stop, and the Yatta Plateau runs along the horizon. Sitting on the Nairobi–Mombasa road, it's the natural way to turn a coast trip into a safari.

Good to know: Distances inside the park are long — plan a couple of nights rather than trying to do it as a day stop.
