Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East is vast, flat and open, a landscape of red earth and scattered baobabs where big elephant herds show up coated in the dust they have been bathing in. The Galana River draws crocodiles, hippos and game to its banks, Lugard Falls is a good picnic stop, and the Yatta Plateau runs along the horizon. Sitting on the Nairobi–Mombasa road, it's the natural way to turn a coast trip into a safari.

How a family visit works

1. 1Plan overnight, or fold East into a Nairobi–Mombasa trip. The park is vast and flat. A day stop that tries to 'see Tsavo' usually becomes a long dusty drive with one picnic. The source is blunt: distances inside are long.
2. 2Enter at a KWS gate on the highway side your driver prefers and stay in the vehicle. Look for elephant herds in red dust, baobabs, and the Yatta Plateau on the horizon.
3. 3Use the Galana River for a slower stretch: crocodiles, hippos, and game coming to drink. Lugard Falls is a picnic-and-stretch stop, not a swimming hole.
4. 4Do not try to combine a serious East circuit with a full West Mzima visit in one day. Pick one park. Younger children handle East if the drives stay shorter and the picnic happens before everyone is cooked.
5. 5Confirm gate and road conditions with KWS or your driver. After rain, black-cotton sections can be a different trip from the dry, corrugated one.

Is a day stop on the way to Mombasa enough?

A short loop near a highway gate can show elephants and dust. It is not the park. If you want the river and Lugard Falls, sleep inside or next to East, or give it a full day without a late ferry-to-the-coast deadline.

Should we choose East or West with kids?

Choose West if the underwater chamber at Mzima will make their week. Choose East if you want open herds and a river picnic and you are already on the Mombasa road. Overnight either way; do not collect both in one exhausted push from Nairobi.
