Tsavo West National Park
Taita-Taveta County
Open daily
Tsavo West is the greener, more dramatic half of the Tsavo ecosystem, with lava flows, volcanic hills and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs. At Mzima a submerged glass viewing chamber lets children look straight into the water at shoals of fish and, with luck, a hippo — an experience nothing else in Kenya offers. Elephants here are famously red from the dust, and the park is an easy break on the drive between Nairobi and the coast.
Good to know: Mzima Springs is walked with a ranger and takes about an hour — the highlight of the park for children.
