Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West is the greener, more dramatic half of the Tsavo ecosystem, with lava flows, volcanic hills and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs. At Mzima a submerged glass viewing chamber lets children look straight into the water at shoals of fish and, with luck, a hippo — an experience nothing else in Kenya offers. Elephants here are famously red from the dust, and the park is an easy break on the drive between Nairobi and the coast.

How a family visit works

1. 1Place Tsavo West on a Nairobi–coast journey or as an overnight, not as a round-trip day from Nairobi. The park is large, volcanic, and greener than Tsavo East. Distances between gates and Mzima eat hours.
2. 2Enter at a KWS gate and keep to vehicle rules. Red-dust elephants and lava scenery are the drive. Save walking for Mzima Springs, which you do with a ranger.
3. 3At Mzima, walk with the ranger to the underwater viewing chamber. Fish are the reliable sight; a hippo passing the glass is luck. About an hour. This is the children's highlight, so do not skip it to chase a longer game loop.
4. 4Younger kids who will not walk the Mzima path can stay with an adult at the parking area, but then they miss the point of West. East's open plains may suit a stay-in-the-car toddler better.
5. 5Confirm Mzima access at the gate; ranger walks depend on staffing. Carry water for the spring stop. Do not invent a second underwater hide elsewhere in Kenya; this is the one.

Can we do Tsavo West as a day trip from Nairobi?

It is the wrong shape of day. Use it as an overnight or as a coast-road safari stop. Mzima plus a transfer already fills the useful hours.

How is this different from Tsavo East?

West is hills, lava, and Mzima's underwater window. East is flatter, more open, Galana River country, and longer empty distances. They share red elephants and a coast-road location; they do not feel the same on the ground.
