Kitale Museum

Kitale Museum grew out of the natural history collection left to the country by Lieutenant Colonel Stoneham, and covers the wildlife, geology and cultures of western Kenya. Outside the galleries are traditional homesteads of local communities, a small collection of live animals and reptiles, and a nature trail through riverine forest behind the grounds. It's a genuinely good hour or two and an easy pairing with Saiwa Swamp.

How a family visit works

1. 1Park at Kitale Museum in town and pay at the NMK desk. Start in the indoor galleries (Stoneham's natural-history collection, geology, western Kenya cultures) only as long as labels still work for your group.
2. 2Go outside to the traditional homesteads. That is the part children usually prefer: walking into houses rather than reading about them.
3. 3If energy remains, take the nature trail through the riverine forest at the back of the grounds. It is a short walk, not Kakamega. Live animals and reptiles on the compound are a bonus circuit, not a zoo day.
4. 4Ninety minutes to two hours is plenty. Saiwa Swamp is the outdoor pairing; do the museum second if the swamp towers already used up the patience.
5. 5Rainy Kitale mornings make this the indoor plan. The trail can wait.
